Siblings

April 26, 2009

Today was my younger brother David’s baptism.

It’s been a while since I’ve stepped into a church. When I used to go, it always felt awkward and tense as I was a stranger within a tight-knit community. This is most obvious when everyone stands, sways, and sings to their church songs while I just stand, overwhelmed, trying to act as though I understand what’s going on. Regardless, I knew my presence today would be appreciated so I made a trip out to Koreatown to be there for my bro.

Got there a bit late because I didn’t dare try to parallel park between the tiny spaces in Koreatown. But I arrived right in time for all the testimonials before the actual baptism. David’s testimony was very well thought-out. I was really taken back by his calmness and ease at public speaking; he is far more articulate than I imagined and I feel terrible for underestimating the awesomeness of the Kim family. Haha. It made me proud knowing how far he’s come and how much he’s struggled growing up. I know that we didn’t have a normal childhood, but I understand it must’ve been very different for David growing up in our shadows.

Anyway, I know he’s changed a lot in the past few years and is living life with a much more positive and optimistic outlook. I’m happy knowing that he’s finally found a place where he feels accepted. I just hope he realizes that his family – blood and all – will always be there for him, too. At least, I will be.

Dead and Gone

April 23, 2009

Squeezing in a few thoughts before workity work:

The past two weeks have been challenging, to put it in modest terms. Work/life balance is a joke. All that talk about “light at the end of the tunnel” is pure illusion. There is no light! There is only more busy season.

At least I have some happy distractions to think about whenever I don’t want to figure out why my SUMIF formula doesn’t work. It’s sad, but I had to cancel my San Diego trip this weekend (the one that Paula, Amy, and I have been planning for MONTHS) to be available for work. I’m completely numb. Take it all from me; I’ve already accepted that this will never end. HA. Don’t you love the cynicism.

Anyway, I appreciate Neil, Gerick and Ali for letting me crash on their sofa. You guys are awesome. Missing everything right now. Sun. Friends. Drinks. Sleep. Sanity.

Btw, thanks Allen for the chat yesterday. You always understand!

i miss running.

Turn it off

April 19, 2009

{Deele – Two Occasions}

I always find solace in writing 4 am entries.

Today was such a beautiful day, which makes me very happy especially after how tough this past week has been. We had the Gala in afternoon which turned out to be quite a success! Thanks Ham and Steve for coming out and bidding on the auction items! It was cool to see all the hard work and months of planning actually happen. A number of interesting things happened at the Gala … haha. I guess that’s what happens when there’s free alcohol.

Everyone was heading over to the afterparty at Busby’s after the Gala so I decided to not be lame for once and hang out. It was also Grant’s birthday and you know how I feel about birthdays …  I had to go! It was a lot of fun! Been a while since I’ve felt so carefree so I definitely appreciated the break. As Brian says, I need to “turn it off” more often and just focus on enjoying life.

Forgot to mention that I got to hang out with Jamie yesterday in Santa Monica where we saw Heidi and Spencer! Haha.

Okay, I apologize for the terribly written entry. It is 4 am!

14 hour work day, but couldn’t be happier to see Brian shine on air!

For those who missed out, I’ll be posting a link to the recording as soon as it’s posted. www.myspace.com/bzanemusic

Hook it up!

Drum roll please …

I’m very excited to announce that one of Brian’s songs will be aired on my friend Ahmar’s DJ show on USC’s KSCR Radio this Monday night!! I hope you guys all tune in to support Brian and Ahmar because we all want to see them make it big one day! Screw the corporate life. Haha.

Am I not an awesome friend or what? It’s all about connecting . the . dots.

Plus, Brian has a new video of him covering Justin Timberlake’s “My Love”. I love BZane’s interpretation … just wants to make you get up and groove!

Side note: Thanks to everyone for keeping tabs on me. I apologize for all the stressing lately – only a few more weeks before it’s all over. At least that’s what I hope. Ah, I look forward to the days of coming home before the sun sets, even if it means sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour. To dinners at 7 or 8 instead of 9 or 10 or 11 (to add to that, to dinners with other people instead of just eating by myself). To catching tv shows LIVE instead of watching them via Hulu. To the days of … life, again. Oh, please tell me there really is light at the end of the tunnel!

Okay, no more fretting. About to head out to dinner and drinks with Christina, Kyle (yes, we reconciled), and Chuck. I haven’t seen them in what feels like ages, so it should be good to reunite again. : )

Finally, one more plug:

The Riordan Gala Fundraiser is next weekend and I really need your support! My team and I have poured an incredible (truly) amount of time into this event so it would mean a great deal if you guys could be there! Tickets are $50 and you can purchase them directly from me! Wine + Silent Auction + Jazz music by a Grammy-nominated band. It doesn’t get better than that. Holla if you’re interested!

Looking forward to …

April 18: Riordan Gala

April 25: San Diego with PDawg, Notorious H.O.U., J Luk, and Bling Ying!

May 2: Riordan Graduation

May 9: Mat Kearney concert w Hami!

May 23: San Francisco to visit EZ, A. Ngo, Caroline, and Kwong

June 20: Vacation

April 8, 2009

this week is kicking my ass.

Title has nothing to do with this entry, but just thought I’d throw it out there to catch your attention.

I could write about how tired I am and how work is going to kick my butt this week, but let’s just try something different, shall we?

A few very cool notes:

  • Steve Glenn, the founder of LivingHomes, came to speak at our last Riordan Fellows session this past Saturday. I found his business idea to be fascinating – building green factory homes. These homes speak to the “creative” generation – one that is conscious of our carbon footprint and its impact on global warming. Not only are his houses “friendlier” to the environment, but they’re artistically tasteful! As a businessman, he provided some powerful advice. That is, true success stems from a combination of profit and purpose. So simple, yet so true.
  • Ham introduced me to this cool site where you can download HD desktop wallpapers. I’ve been raving about it all day. I think this will motivate me to keep my desktop organized so I can look at my nice wallpaper. You should check it out!

Okay. Minus 5 hours until I have to wake up for work. Later, gators.

more than just names.
